Welcome

The Dutch based NOTS Foundation has set up NOTS Mali SARL in 2011, a company in Mali to promote and sell solar LED lights. The NOTS Foundation in the Netherlands is a social enterprise; organized and financed as a company. NOTS only works with products that directly improve the lives of people in developing countries and for which is an actual need. NOTS Mali has been set up to execute two main activities:

  • Setting up a distribution channel to sell and promote solar LED lights with phone chargers. The ambition of NOTS Mali  is to have all kerosene lights in Mali replaced by solar LED lights

  • Developping a scalable business model to stop fuelwood-driven deforestation in Africa

Sustainable charcoal and agro-forestry

The goal of this project is to develop a replicable business model that the firewood driven deforestation in Africa calls a halt. An area east of Bamako, capital of Mali (Siranikoro) currently serves as a testing ground for the development of the concept. After the creation of the Malian pilot area, the business model in other countries who suffer the consequences of deforestation are applied.

Deforestation in developing countries is often caused by the expanding agriculture. However, in countries like Mali where still a large part of the population lives outside the reach of the grid, the logging is largely due to the great demand for firewood for cooking and charcoal production. The charcoal is often very inefficiently produced, thereby reducing the yield of the converted timber is low and also human health harm (due to the large amounts of toxic smoke that during the process).

Within this project, NOTS sustainable charcoal kilns, the ADAM retort, introduce the productivity of charcoal production for the local population increase. Moreover, there agroforestry deployed to the villages to provide a sustainable and renewable source of firewood and food crops for their own use and for sale on the market.

Through this dual approach would NOTS the following 4 goals to achieve:

  • The firewood driven by deforestation halt.
  • Sufficient food supply to the local population.
  • Least the same amount of firewood and charcoal production as currently happens.
  • The income of the local population by 20% increase.
